Mr Smith surgery review

"James understood my situation and expectations from day one, and explained in understandable phrasing what my options were. James put me at ease, which is important. James has been excellent and totally professional from start to finish"

My Philosophy

I believe it is important that you fully understand your knee problem, and what may be causing your symptoms. By taking the time to go through imaging (x-rays and MRI scans) together, and discussing the available evidence-based treatment options, I hope that you feel empowered to manage your symptoms, and make better informed decisions about what is best for your knee, for now and the future.

Mr James Smith
MBBS BSc FRCS (Tr&Orth) PGMedCert

I am a dual fellowship trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol, working in both The NHS and the independent sector. I have a high volume specialist practice in treating complex orthopaedic trauma, soft tissue knee injuries (including meniscal tears, cartilage injury, and ligament reconstruction), and knee arthritis. I offer osteotomy (realignment surgery) for early degeneration, and partial and total joint replacement for more advanced disease. I have a further sub-specialty practice in the treatment of patellofemoral (kneecap) instability and pain, and receive referrals from across the south of the UK.

Having attended secondary school in Bristol, and medical school at Imperial College London, I completed my specialist orthopaedic training on the highly regarded Severn Deanery training programme. After being awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, I completed two further years of subspecialty training; firstly in major orthopaedic trauma in Calgary, Canada, and secondly in knee replacement, sports knee surgery, and the management of patellofemoral disorders, at the renowned Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.

I am always striving to improve treatment and outcome for my patients, and thus have an ongoing involvement in research and training. I have presented and published my research nationally and internationally, and continue to collaborate on studies with colleagues from across the country. I teach on industry led courses, train a subspecialty knee fellow, and sit as faculty at national meetings. This passion and commitment to remaining contemporary in my practice ensures that I can offer my patients proven and evidence-based orthopaedic treatments.
